Nata Conservation Trust was founded on a community-first principle: conservation only succeeds when it improves the lives of the people who live closest to it.

Four partner villages

Four villages share ownership of the sanctuary’s governance and its benefits. A trustee board elected by representatives of these communities guides every major decision.

How the Trust benefits the region

All visitor revenue is reinvested directly into wetland conservation and community livelihood projects — not extracted as profit.
Local employment is generated through sanctuary operations, guiding, and hospitality at the gate campsite.
A trustee board elected by the four villages ensures decisions reflect community priorities, not just conservation targets.
Residents co-created the sanctuary itself in 1993, voluntarily relocating roughly 3,500 cattle to make way for protected habitat.
